PLACES OF INTEREST
HISTORICAL LANDMARKS Tacloban’s earliest structures are the capitol building and residences of prominent families. These structures stand as silent witnesses to great decisions made during the liberation of the Philippines. The Price Mansion (now CAP building), was the official headquarters of Gen. Douglas MacArthur. A room bearing his name is preserved for viewing. The edifice’s architecture depicts that of the American Colonial period circa: 1900-1946. The Redoña House was the official liberation residence of President Sergio Osmeña and his staff. The Provincial Capitol Building was the seat of the Philippine Commonwealth Government in 1944.
OTHER LANDMARKS
The Philippine-Japan Peace Commemorative Monument and Park. Overlooking calm Cancabato Bay, this multi-tiered park was realized through the assistance of the Tokyo Survivors Association in honor of the soldiers and paramilitary personnel who died during World War II. The Maria Kanon Madonna of Peace Shrine. Fashioned by a famous contemporary Japanese sculptor from a solid piece of rare miyagi stone, this lovely statue of an Asian Madonna stands on a tranquil little valley at Kanhuraw Hill, with its serene ambiance that place is perfect for reflection. The Sto. Niño Shrine and Heritage Museum is home to antique art collections, priceless furniture, fine porcelain and ivory of English, French, and Chinese origin. A chapel can also be found inside the Shrine. A few meters away is the People’s Center and Library. This imposing structure houses volumes of rare books from different parts of the world. One can also find a number of dioramas depicting the life of early Filipinos. Awashed with the splendor of Cancabato Bay is another popular destination of locals and visitors alike. The Balyu-an Park boasts of an amphitheater facing the sea that is often the venue of cultural shows and sporting events. It is also the site of the yearly reenactment of Balyu-an Rites the exchange of the two Sto. Niño images of Basey, Samar and Tacloban City during Vesperas Day.
